Building a Safer Future in Music — Together

In the wake of growing headlines about harassment and abuse in the music industry, it’s impossible to remain silent. As a woman who’s spent years navigating this field — on tour, in recording studios, and behind the scenes — I’ve witnessed firsthand both the beauty and the deep inequities that continue to persist in our creative spaces.

This year, I had the opportunity to attend WAMCON, a conference that champions the work of women in audio. I was energized by the sense of community but also struck by the stark truth: the numbers don’t lie. Women professionals in music, particularly in technical and leadership roles, remain vastly underrepresented. Despite our talent, drive, and resilience, we are still not showing up in the rooms where decisions are made — at least not in the numbers we should be.

I also had the honour of participating as a mentor at Canadian Music Week — a role I took on with pride, but also with a heavy heart. Time and again, I heard from emerging artists who are still encountering many of the same barriers that generations before them faced: unsafe environments, power imbalances, and a lack of support systems that center women and gender-diverse creatives.

These experiences have only reaffirmed the mission behind the Women’s Music Alliance (WMA) — a grassroots movement I’m proud to be part of.

WMA exists to reimagine and rebuild the music industry through a lens of equity, safety, and mutual care. We’re not just advocating for more seats at the table — we’re reshaping the table entirely. We believe in community over competition, and in building an industry that is grounded in feminine values like sustainability, collaboration, and nurturing leadership.

Through artist-driven events, skill-sharing workshops, mentorship programs, and live showcases, WMA is creating tangible spaces where underrepresented voices are not only heard, but celebrated. Whether you’re a producer, songwriter, performer, or organizer, our growing network is here to connect and uplift.

The time for change is now — not just in headlines, but in action. Let’s create safer, more inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive.

If you’re ready to be part of that change, join us. Our strength lies in each other.

With heart,

Women’s Music Alliance Team
